Results of Questionnaires

Our main task was to distribute questionnaires to people because this would help us to further develop our understanding of the needs that our target audience has. My magazine is a Pop Rock magazine I aim to target people aged 13 – 25 as this is the demographic I understand better, due to being in that same demographic. I handed the questionnaire to a number of twenty people and this was completed on paper. My questionnaire conducted of eleven questions:

The first question asked people their age. I had given people four options in which it included different ages. I asked this question because it is important to understand that different ages have various preferences to certain music. The four option boxes were: ‘Under 13’; ’14-19’; ’20 – 25’ and ‘26+’. These options were presented to the people taking part in the questionnaire and the most popular option was 14-19 year olds. Every person selected that option which suggests that I should create a magazine which targets these age groups.

The second question of the questionnaire asked for people’s gender. I asked this because, similar to the age question, different genders have different tastes and to ensure that the magazine will satisfy the right kind of people. I included three options in this question: ‘Male’; ‘Female’ and ‘Other’. I included the ‘Other’ option to include different identities that people identify themselves as. Twenty people answered the question and it resulted with a eighteen females and two males. These results summarise that the magazine that I am creating should focus on a female demographic.

The question after the gender question asked people what genre was the music they listen to because people listen to different types of music and not all people listen to rock music. This questioned allowed users to select more than one option so it gave me an understanding on the comparisons of the genres they chose. The following were the options given to person completing the questionnaire: ‘Classic Rock’, ‘Popular Rock’, ‘Indie Rock’, ‘Psychedelic Rock’ and ‘Other Genres’. The percentages of each are as followed:

Classic Rock – 7.4%
Popular Rock – 22.2%
Indie Rock – 22.2%
Psychedelic – 3.7%
Other Genres – 44.4%

According to this data, it makes it clear that most people listen to other genres as well as rock meaning that people have a variety of types of music they enjoy. However in terms of types of rock music: ‘Popular Rock’ and ‘Indie Rock’ are the most popular genres and thus I would need to focus on these two genres.

A question, regarding the magazine layout was the types of poses the anchor model was to have. This also allowed people to choose more than one choice of front cover model. The following image shows what the question looked like and each one is numbered to help with the analysis. The most popular choice, according to the sample of twenty people, was picture number three or labelled as ‘Pete and Patrick 2’. This has the most percentage (37.9%) Which concludes that this pose should be used because it clearly shows style and places models in a different position.
Overall this allows me to understand that my magazine should target the female demographic, aged 14-19. It will mostly follow Indie Rock/Popular rock music and it will have a pose where the anchor models are close to one another.
